Commercial Marine Case Study

Offshore research vessels have been using large, heavy blocks to lay fiber-optic research cables. These cumbersome blocks require multiple technicians to move them into position which can result in damage to the cables.

Using lightweight, extremely strong materials, Harken has designed an alternative block. Not only is it light enough to be handled by a single operator, but the reduced block weight allows it to align to the cable payout. The sheave diameter accommodates the cable’s large-bend radius, while the throat is wide enough for the wire terminals to pass through.

Materials were selected for their low-corrosion, high-strength properties. Their self-lubricating characteristics also reduce static buildup.
