Case Study – Sunshades & Awnings

Companies: Lucas Sail, Hibiscus, University of Virginia.

Market: architecture and external sunshades.

Task: A glass-covered atrium had no protection from the sun and became too hot for visitors.

Solution: Harken provided an affordable solution by mounting lightweight furling units to retract and deploy awnings to combat heat and provide sun protection.

Harken units were chosen because they were strong enough to take the strain and weight of the span length. Pulley leads were attached to the ground.

Fabric was attached to the furler and pulley system via a tension wire and installed without significantly increasing the load on the roof structure.
