Problem
Design a strong, low-friction block that withstands corrosion, eliminates static build-up, and can manage the large bend radius of fiber optic cable.
Solution
Harken engineering custom-designed a wide-diameter block to handle the large bend radius required of fiber optic cable. The block’s large center hole moves the center of gravity toward the shackle, aligning the block with the load for an optimum towing angle. This angle is vital to properly lead cable overboard, to deploy instruments, or to pull other data gathering equipment like sonar or high-resolution video camera systems. The wide sheave opening allows the passage of wire terminals. Sensors mounted in the sheave monitor line count, speed, and tension.
Lightweight aluminium sideplates are deep-saturation Hardkote anodized to prevent corrosion. Dissimilar metals like aluminum and stainless steel are isolated for additional corrosion protection. The Nylatron® sheave’s durable material is self lubricating and has superior mechanical strength, wear characteristics, and anti-static properties.
Blocks can be designed to your specification.
