Luxury Motor Yacht, Seahorse, Improves Safety with Harken 6:1 Man Overboard Purchase System

Business Segment: Commercial marine, Rescue

Location:  Monaco, France

Project Description:

M/Y Seahorse is a 52 m (171') custom and luxury motor yacht that was built in Ameles, Holland, at the Makkum shipyard. Previously named Tigre d’Or, the vessel can reach a top speed of 14 knots and is able to accommodate up to 11 guests and 13 crew. Terence Disdale worked on the motor yacht’s stunning exterior and interior design.

With Harken Industrial’s Access Rail system already in place on the motor yacht, M/Y Seahorse needed to add a suitable man overboard (MOB) retrieval system that could integrate with their existing setup.

A lightweight and versatile system was required that could be connected to a helicopter sling, as well as anchored to the Access Rail system using stainless-steel carabiners.

In addition, it also had to be safe, reliable, simple to operate by crew members of varying strength, and supplied with relevant certification to meet regulations (EN 13157 Machinery Directive) and best practice.

The result would ensure that in an emergency, the MOB could be easily lifted from either the rescue tender or the water and brought back to safety.

Solution/Equipment Used:

The solution is Harken Industrial’s low-friction 6:1 purchase system from Harken Industrial™ (product number 443.2141.6M).

With a solid reputation for designing and manufacturing premium load-handling apparatus, Harken Industrial chose the 6:1 purchase system because it is powerful yet lightweight, compact, and easy to maintain.

This purchase system has a break load of 1700 kg (17 kN / 3821.7 lb) and a maximum rated load of 170 kg (1.7 kN / 375 lb) based on a safety factor of 10 for human lifting. It is certified via the Machinery Directive and supplied with a Declaration of Conformity.

As M/Y Seahorse already had EN795:2012 certified Access Rail systems installed, the MOB purchase system was incredibly easy to attach and operate, exceeding the required specification.

A Harken Industrial rope bag is also supplied to keep the kit neatly stored away when not in use or in transit.

Client Testimonial:

“The Harken Industrial 6:1 purchase system, connected to the Access Rail on M/Y Seahorse, ensures that we can safely and easily rescue the MOB during an emergency. The equipment works perfectly with our existing setup and is lightweight, strong and versatile. Overall we are very happy with the MOB retrieval system and the service offered by Harken Industrial has been excellent.”

Matt Cowpe, captain, M/Y Seahorse.
