Business Segment: Safety at Height
Location: Milan, Italy.
Project Description: Sicurlive Group develops, produces and supplies certified fall-arrest devices. They also install safety systems and provide technical training. Sicurlive, while working on the Generali Tower in Milan, requested that a rope-access and fall-arrest system be incorporated into the building design that allowed both internal and external access for maintenance. The system had to be “invisible” against the building’s sleek glass façade. The tower, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, is a high-rise building famous for its distinctive twisted design.
Solution/Equipment Used: Harken Industrial™ chose the R27 Long Span Access Rail system to do the job. It uses the same strong, low maintenance, free-rolling trolleys as the Access Rail system, but its robust structural profile accepts a longer distance between attachment points, allowing a number of installation options. Multiple installation configurations let workers install the rail in a variety of ways in different areas of the building, reducing time and cost in the installation process.
The most complicated challenge was fixing the rail onto the building’s external glass façade. The manufacturer created a special plate to mount the Long Span to the building’s aluminum frame. Internally, custom brackets attached the Long Span rail to the structural steel. The Long Span Rail’s black anodizing blended perfectly with the black structural frame of the glass façade, complementing the building’s sleek design and ensuring the rail remained invisible both internally and externally throughout.
Summary: Installing the Long-Span Access Rail system provides a low maintenance, highly flexible means of safe access to the building, without compromising any of the unique aesthetics of its elegant design.
